Regional Medical Coder (PA)

Tenet is seeking to hire a remote(work from home) Regional Medical Coder in PA area, supporting several operational units in the Tenet Health system.

The medical coder is responsible for accurate coding and abstracting of clinical information for both inpatients and outpatients from the electronic medical record.


  • Thorough knowledge of ICD-9-CM and CPT coding principles and rules, Coding Clinic guidelines, coding compliance, etc. and ability to effectively and professionally communicate the same
  • Inpatient and outpatient coding proficiency demonstrated initially by successful completion of the Tenet coding exercise and/or AHIMA competency skills assessment tool (please also see minimum job requirements and required work experience further below).
  • Working knowledge of disease processes, MS-DRG and APC classification and reimbursement structures, applicable coding edits, and general knowledge of both Local Coverage Decisions (“LCDs”) and National Coverage Decisions (“NCD”) as it relates to coding/billing
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills; ability to meaningfully engage other coding professionals, provide feedback, teach or lead by example, etc.
  • Experience with encoder technology and computerized abstracting systems, along with electronic health record (EHR) familiarity (Cerner and McKesson HPF are preferred)
  • Organization and prioritization skills for effective workload and time management
  • Capacity to work independently as well as incorporate a team approach
  • Ability to exercise discretionary judgment , successfully problem-solve and follow instructions
  • Good visual acuity with ability to sit for extended periods of time, view a computer screen and hand/finger dexterity for keyboard/mouse use throughout the work session
  • Ability to travel occasionally within the Southeast part of the USA on occasion (job function is largely remote in nature)


  • Successful completion of at least one AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) certified program with achievement of the correlating professional credential ( RHIA, RHIT, CCS, etc.); active and in good standing,
  • preferably a combination of two or more credentials.
  • Minimum of four years of Medicare inpatient and outpatient (recent hands-on production) coding experience in an acute care hospital setting
  • Supervisory or team lead experience preferred but not required
