Want to Earn Extra Money? Here are 5 Things NOT to Do

November 4th, 2013

Everyone and their mother want to find out how to earn extra money online.

The curiosity is understandable. After all, rags-to-riches stories through online exploits litter the web.  And while many of these stories are true, instant dollars isn’t all there is to it.

If you’re looking to earn money online, let’s start with the things you shouldn’t do.

1. Don’t invest time and effort on your online venture.

If you expect instant riches with minimal work from the very beginning, you may want to rethink that perspective. People who think that they can start earning big as soon as they click a link usually end up bitterly disappointed, and some even swear off the internet.

Whether you participate in paid surveys, write for the websites and blogs, or start an online business on the side, you need to put in time and effort to make it happen. You have to dedicate your time to submit applications to online jobs, look for other well-paying gigs, create a product or design a service, and market yourself aggressively.

But it’s not just working hard. It also means working smart. Use the numerous free tools and apps online to help you succeed.

  • Learn how to use Google search effectively so you can find jobs and opportunities on the web easily.
  • Study how online sites like oDesk and Elance work and start building your credibility.
  • Use trustworthy websites that curate legitimate online jobs and work-at-home opportunities.

2. Believe in money, not people.

While having a clear goal of what you want to earn and how you plan to earn it is all good, beware of focusing too much on the mighty dollar. If you’re all about the money and nothing else, you’ll soon lose steam. That way of thinking can only motivate you for so long.

Instead, pay attention to the people online and off who can help you achieve your goals.

Remember those success stories? The real ones? Discover the people behind them, the ones you want to emulate, and use their stories as inspiration. Get in touch with them and other people who have the same goals as you. Network, help, and work with others.

3. Jump into every Make-Money-Quick bandwagon you come across.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of beautifully crafted money-making programs. There are a lot of them out there, but not all of it are real. If you’re still finding your way around how to make some money online, it’s better to focus your time and effort on one or two things that you’re confident you can pull off.

Joining (and even paying) for multiple programs, applying to different jobs, and starting several online businesses at one go will divide your attention, affecting the quality of the results your want.

4. Ignore reviews of companies you join and products that you use or sell.

More often than not, you’ll find yourself considering signing up for an affiliate program, participating in a survey, starting a certain business, or applying for an online job. Before you do, take the time to investigate these opportunities if they look like they’re too good to be true. Always question promises of quick riches, especially if it asks you to pay.

You’re not the only one looking at these opportunities. There were others before you and they’ve probably written reviews and other articles about them. Decide only after you do your homework.

5. Stop learning about the industry.

While it’s always a good call to be cautious, don’t let it prevent you from learning as much as you can about whatever it is you want to earn from or earn with. The web is an ever-changing and ever-evolving place, and you have to learn how to keep up.  What may have earned you a thousand dollars one day a month ago can become obsolete in the following morning.

So keep your ear to the ground and never stop learning and trying new, legitimate ways to earn online. Find an expert you can trust and ask for advice when needed.
